Provision of Remote Broadband Services in Northern Ireland
Over 99% of households and businesses in Northern Ireland can receive broadband services over a telephone line. However, due to distance from the nearest exchange, there are a small number of premises across Northern Ireland where it is not possible to deliver a robust wire-line broadband service and where it is necessary to deploy a fixed wireless or satellite service.
Since December 2005, the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment has had in place contracts with telecoms providers to ensure that those living and working in remote and rural areas have access to a broadband service.
On 6 January 2012, the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment appointed Onwave Ltd to ensure continued access to a satellite service for business and residential consumers unable to avail of broadband via a wire-line solution.
