ASHE Definitions
Unless otherwise stated, average earnings figures relate to:
1. Gross pay (including basic pay, overtime pay, commissions, shift premium pay, bonus or incentive pay and allowances), and before deductions for PAYE, National Insurance, pension schemes, student loan repayments and voluntary deductions.
2. Full-time employees, i.e. those working more than 30 hours each week excluding overtime and main meal breaks (25 hours for teachers and academics).
3. Those whose pay has not been affected by absence.
4. Employees on adult rates of pay.
Annual earnings are only provided for those employees who have been in the same job for at least 12 months, regardless of whether or not their pay was affected by absence.
Average hourly earnings are calculated by dividing the sum of the weekly earnings of the group of employees by the sum of their total weekly hours.
